CRIME NEWS

  • City Manager Mike Van Milligen was injured last night when an intoxicated driver hit his car door downtown—34-year-old Christopher Higgins fled the scene and was later found unconscious on Aerostar Drive facing multiple traffic charges—leading to Van Milligen’s hospitalization at Mercy One Medical Center for a broken kneecap.  Radio Dubuque
  • 20-year-old Byron Manning pled guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree burglary and was sentenced this week to 10 years in prison for a September 2024 home break-in on University Avenue that involved drawing guns and stealing an Xbox and iPhone while 21-year-old Alexander Carmen is set to go to trial on April 29.  Radio Dubuque

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa lawmakers passed a bill on Thursday raising penalties for assaults on first responders—making such attacks a Class C felony if serious injury or a weapon is involved—and another that makes sending unsolicited explicit images a serious misdemeanor. The House also advanced a measure to set up a psilocybin licensing board at clinics to offer veterans a new option for PTSD treatment.  The Gazette
  • City officials said they will not impose penalties on the 98-year-old Canfield Hotel for repeated health-and-safety violations noted since January — a March 18 inspection found issues like bed bugs, cockroaches and dirty conditions — while the owners work to meet state law requirements.  Radio Dubuque
