Hy-Vee has launched a donation program in Dubuque that rounds up customer totals to benefit local food pantries—each store directs funds to its nearby pantry.

The chain also offers pre-packed grocery bags and free meals for kids from 4 to 7 p.m. this week, with adults paying $3 for the same meal.

Veridian Credit Union is donating $100K to food banks, local pantries, and free Thanksgiving meal programs in Iowa, Nebraska— Minnesota.

The funding will support efforts to ease food insecurity during the holiday season.

Tuesday night, the Dubuque Community School District's $70 million bond referendum failed by 3.16%—11,569 votes for and 8,784 against—stalling plans to consolidate middle schools and close one school regardless.

The district will gather input from families and staff before deciding on cuts or other changes to address enrollment and funding challenges.

Federal guidance will reduce SNAP benefits in Iowa for November as only households receiving the maximum benefit will get half their usual amount while most families may receive far less or nothing at all.

State officials noted that recalculating benefits using older systems—details still being worked out—could take weeks, leaving many Iowans facing food insecurity amid the ongoing shutdown.

A recent study by Wellbrook Recovery shows that 22.6% of Iowa adults engage in binge drinking, ranking the state third nationally while Wisconsin follows at 21.6%—the research also reports that nearly 16% of Iowans have substance use issues, raising concerns over long-term health risks including cancer.

Several former Dubuque Metro high school athletes will be active in college games on Nov.

8. The athletes – including players from Dubuque Senior, Loras Duhawks, and West Delaware – will compete in contests scheduled between 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
