EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Dubuque School District is promoting a $70 million bond referendum — the plan consolidates Jefferson and Washington schools into a safer modern facility with better traffic flow and climate control for students. A public meeting to discuss the bond is set for October 21 at Washington Middle School. KWWL
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ City officials have paused the flood gate replacement and pump station project at the 16th Street detention basin because the Iowa DNR ordered a stop over concerns about contamination from a fertilizer spill at Gavilon Grain in 2020. The city has hired HDR Engineering and Terracon Consultants to conduct environmental studies costing nearly $240 thousand from the project's contingency budget before work can resume. Radio Dubuque
- ➤ Locher Recreation Area is set to be Dubuque County’s largest public lake on a 116-acre site near Cascade and will include a 1.6-mile trail, fishing piers, a boat ramp, and kayak access to the North Fork of the Maquoketa River. Twin Rivers Pheasants Forever finished shoreline work—seeding is in place—and the Conservation Board will soon work with a design firm to gather community input as the project prepares to open in about 18 months. - ➤ UMB Financial Corporation announced that 38 employees will be laid off effective November 1 — the decision comes as UMB transitions from Dubuque Bank & Trust from October 10 through 13 after its January acquisition of Heartland Financial Services. Radio Dubuque
