- ➤ The John G. Bergfeld Recreation Area in Dubuque now features a historic bridge—a 19th century structure known as the Dubuque Dunleith Bridge—that was moved to the park in 2010. The site offers an easy trail, a fishing pond with jetties, picnic tables and a pavilion for family outings despite concerns over avian influenza. WJOD
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A Dubuque family was displaced after a house fire started in the kitchen because unattended cooking oil ignited at 9:57 p.m. Thursday—19 firefighters responded quickly to put out the blaze that caused about $60,000 in damage and led the Red Cross to offer lodging. KWWL
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mayor Brad Cavanagh gave his 2025 State of the City address in which he condemned acts of political violence and said Dubuque is strong. He outlined plans to boost police and fire staffing, develop a Downtown Master Plan, build a new sports complex on Chaplain Schmitt Island, and secure daily air service—efforts meant to keep the city growing. - ➤ The Social Security Administration announced that beginning September 30th, Iowans will no longer receive paper checks as monthly benefits will be issued electronically — through direct deposit or with a Direct Express prepaid debit card, and residents must enroll by phone, online, or mail to ensure timely payments.
