🌲 Environment
Researchers have tested nearly 6,000 white oaks over the past decade but still have not found the cause—experts will continue tests in the next two years to learn why these mature trees are dying.
Foresters warn that the loss of these valuable oaks may lead to a significant economic hit for Iowa’s timber market.
The Trappist Monks at New Melleray Abbey near Dubuque work with nature by tending gardens, planting trees, and making handmade caskets while building beaver dam analogs to slow water flow—efforts that protect land and support local jobs.
They received over $3 million from the Forest Legacy Program to keep 1,456 acres forested and support their craft with international sales.
