COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Archbishop Thomas Zinkula has announced a plan to merge local parishes into pastorates for weekend mass to serve as starting points and may change based on feedback. Information sessions will be scheduled soon — parishes will submit recommendations in November and new pastorates and priest assignments are expected next year.  Radio Dubuque

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens unveiled its first ever Master Plan — a 30-year vision to expand its facilities with a reimagined visitor’s center — made possible by the efforts of many; Executive Director Jenna Hirtz said the ambitious blueprint sets the stage for future projects in the arboretum.  Radio Dubuque

  • Matt Kalcevich was named the new parks and recreation director for Dubuque, effective September 15, as he takes over from Marie Ware who retired in July. He brings over 20 years of parks experience from his last role in Omaha with a large budget — and the city manager praised his collaborative style.  KWWL

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • During Labor Day weekend, a Dubuque family enjoyed kayaking, fishing, and wildlife watching at Mud Lake Park—a 57-acre outdoor area about six miles north of Dubuque along the Mississippi + they spotted bald eagles and snakes. The park offers a boat ramp, picnic shelters, and a new kayak launch + thick duckweed covered parts of the lake but did not end the fun.  WJOD
