EDUCATION NEWS

  • The YES for Dubuque Schools committee is raising support for a $70 million bond referendum planned for the November ballot to fund a new middle school on the Washington site and consolidate aging Jefferson and Washington schools. The bond will combine funds with $51.9 million from the one cent sales tax fund + SAVE to cut operating costs by up to $2.5 million annually and provide improved learning environments.  KCRG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reported more than 2,000 mountain lion sightings since 2010 — including 12 in 2022 and 11 in 2023 — and said the big cats are simply traveling through Iowa in search of deer without forming a breeding population.  WJOD

FINANCE NEWS

  • A Credit One Bank survey shows that 51% of Iowans plan to use a credit card for a $500 emergency while 49% prefer cash; younger residents are even more likely to rely on credit – 60% of those under 35 would use credit even when exceeding their limit. Many families may face harder financial times if unexpected expenses arise without enough savings.  WJOD
