EDUCATION NEWS

  • Clarke University's Nursing department in Dubuque received a $127,577 grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust to renovate its Nursing Simulation Lab, which trains both nursing and physical therapy students. The funds will update simulation mannequins and software + help expand integrated simulation scenarios for improved student practice.  KWWL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • According to Dubuque County Conservation, Swiss Valley Park and Campground reopened after cleanup and repairs caused by record rainfall up to six inches last Sunday morning—while the Swiss Valley Preserve remains closed.  Radio Dubuque
  • On July 11, EPA sent a letter to Iowa DNR reversing its November decision to list seven segments of Iowa rivers—Cedar, Des Moines, Iowa, Raccoon and South Skunk—for nitrate impairment. Local critics and experts say the decision ignores summer nitrate spikes that raise health risks and may allow more pollution, urging a public review of the change.  The Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Dubuque County Recorder Karol Kennedy resigned on July 9 due to an unsafe work environment—this surprised Supervisor Harley Pothoff, who had expected her to serve until 2026. The county appointed Ann Sweeney on August 11—county HR is reviewing work conditions.  KCRG
  • The Dubuque City Council will review a proposed agreement with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources on August 18 about 72 self-reported permit violations at the City’s Water and Resource Recovery Center from 2020 to 2024 (including incidents from contractor error and a December 2024 explosion) that carries a $7,000 penalty. This review is part of the city’s plan to invest over $134 million through fiscal year 2030 to upgrade infrastructure and improve oversight.  KWWL

  • Dubuque officials have set up cooling centers from today through Monday after forecasted 90-degree temperatures with high humidity could push the heat index near or above 100. The centers include Bunker Hill Golf Course Clubhouse, Carnegie-Stout Public Library, Dubuque Intermodal Transportation Center Lobby, Dubuque Rescue Mission, Dubuque Salvation Army, ImOn Ice Arena, Kennedy Mall, Multicultural Family Center, Petco and PetSmart—each with set operating hours.  Radio Dubuque
