CRIME NEWS

  • Iowa residents report receiving texts that claim to be from the DOT demanding payment for unpaid tolls (a scam called smishing) and warn that clicking links can steal personal information (official sources confirm IowaDOT never sends fee collection texts).  WJOD
  • Dubuque Police arrested 45-year-old Denona Ward Jr. at 483 Loras Blvd, No. 6 at 12:15 a.m. on August 1 for going armed with intent & domestic assault after he stabbed 38-year-old Tobias C. Sarazan and assaulted another resident & Sarazan was taken to a hospital for treatment of his hand injuries.  Radio Dubuque
  • On Thursday afternoon, Dubuque Police arrested 20-year-old Antwan M. Hardia and 21-year-old Faith L. Cook after an altercation at Hardia’s home when Cook went through his phone which led to a physical clash involving pepper spray+ a chase in which Hardia pointed a non-firing airsoft handgun, leaving visible injuries on both.  Radio Dubuque

  • Today, Iowa shoppers can buy items without paying sales tax as part of a tax-free holiday that exempts more than 100 items, though items costing over $100 remain taxable (6% sales) and additional local tax applies (1% option), with businesses required to participate and the sale ending at midnight while not extending to Sunday.  Radio Dubuque

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dubuque officials asked the federal government to restore the HUD National Disaster Resilience Competition Grant—used in 2016 to fund over $31.5 million in storm water and home repair projects—to reduce flash flooding risks. New HUD Regional Administrator Joe Mitchell toured project sites and said he would pass the city’s request to Congress and HUD Secretary Scott Turner for future support.  KCRG

  • Fruit Variety Snack Pack has been recalled by Doehler Dry Ingredient Solutions for possible Listeria contamination—sold at Sam’s Club in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin between July 1st and July 25th with UPC 1 93968 50900 2 in use; no illnesses have been reported so far. Consumers should return affected boxes for a refund or replacement.  WJOD
  • Finley Hospital started using a new CT scanner this week that uses smart imaging technology and a patient-focused design to give more comfort and clearer images. The Siemens X.Cite has a wider opening, a camera to help staff watch patients, and a tablet system for better communication—letting doctors see detailed 3-D images of bones, organs, and tissues.  Radio Dubuque
