  • The Dubuque Regional Humane Society has introduced Jett, a 5-year-old, 80-pound dog available for adoption who does well with older kids and other dogs — he is looking for a calm, steady home in Dubuque.  WJOD
  • Officials said lower attendance at last week's county fairs was due to hot, humid weather and fewer big-name concerts, with the Dubuque fair drawing about 40,000 people compared with roughly 49,000 last year—Jackson fair attendance dropped from 39,341 to about 35,500.  Radio Dubuque

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Dubuque’s Wendt Center received a $355K grant from the Educating Character Initiative to expand its character and leadership programs. The funding will support new projects—Pathways to Purpose and an expanded Character Scholars program—across 19 academic departments to strengthen the student experience.  WJOD
  • Loras College appointed Dr. Sarah K. Nytroe as its new Provost on July 30. She brings over 15 years of higher education leadership from her roles at DeSales University — where she co-led initiatives like university reaccreditation and a new general education curriculum.  Radio Dubuque

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Dubuque recycling station moved from 925 Kerper Court to The Jule Operations and Training Center at 949 Kerper Blvd due to a planned construction project—officials from the Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency said it will remain at this temporary site until the end of October.  Radio Dubuque

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city of Dubuque seeks volunteers to fill two new Civil Service Commission positions—meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 4:15 p.m., and the board has expanded from three to five members after a change in Iowa law.  Radio Dubuque

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A Dubuque man said his landlord forced him to move from his month-to-month apartment at 605 Bluff Street—he complained to the city about a foul smell, piles of garbage, and a mice infestation in a vacant unit above. City officials said state law bans retaliation and records show the landlord faced over 65 complaints since 2018.  KCRG
