CULTURE NEWS

  • Rock band Bush will headline Q Casino’s Back Waters Stage on Saturday, September 6 — gates will open at 6:30 p.m. and the show will start at 8:00 p.m. — and fans can buy general admission tickets for $59.99 or choose the Turpin Tailgate experience in Dubuque.  WJOD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Mark Early Childhood Center, set to open in September, is close to meeting its goal of raising $1.75 million—so far, the center has raised $1.5 million and seeks additional support to finish the project at its 6,744 square-foot facility on Kennedy Circle for children from birth to age four.  Radio Dubuque

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Iowa has more firefly sightings this year based on research and photo counts, but experts note that decades of habitat loss, pesticides & drought have driven a long-term decline in their numbers. Dubuque County Conservation may begin tracking local fireflies to better understand these trends.  The Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dubuque unveiled an upgraded data center in the city’s Information and Technology building on Chavenelle Road that now hosts key systems for police, the county’s 911 center, and utility billing. The city still keeps some servers in the old funeral home basement and will add battery backup and an extra generator when funding is available — a move that strengthens its emergency preparedness.  KCRG
  • The Iowa and Wisconsin Departments of Transportation announced that the Iowa 9/WIS82 Black Hawk bridge will be closed this fall for demolition so a new bridge can be built over the Mississippi River. Officials are arranging alternative routes—such as restored water taxi services or using nearby crossings—while construction continues with a planned opening in 2027.  KWWL
  • Dubuque is offering a free pickup service for tree limbs that fell in storms on July 10th and 11th, available today through July 21st. Residents must bundle branches that are no more than three inches thick, tied with rope, and under 40 pounds & set them out by 6 a.m. on their regular trash day & follow the size and weight guidelines for pickup.  WJOD

HEALTH NEWS

  • An Eastern Iowa adult tested positive for measles and visited stores, pharmacies, a day care, and a golf course while contagious last week—making this the seventh case in Iowa this year. Health officials urge anyone born in or after 1957 who is unvaccinated or unsure of their immunity and visited these sites to complete an online questionnaire.  The Gazette
