CRIME NEWS

  • During a traffic stop last week along Highway 151 near Cascade, Dubuque County authorities said 36-year-old James Sherrill of Linn County died after drawing a handgun and firing at 46-year-old Sergeant Adam Williams—who was treated and released—while officers Chad Leitzen and Cole Millard were placed on critical incident leave.  Radio Dubuque

CULTURE NEWS

  • Two river otters now explore their new outdoor habitat at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, which opened on Wednesday—this exhibit expansion is part of the Preserve the Wonder campaign and gives the otters a choice of indoor or outdoor living in a setting that features a waterslide, a sunning log, limestone bluffs, and a crawl-in viewing space for children.  KWWL
  • The City of Dubuque awarded $250,000 in Operating Support Grant funds to 20 local non-profit arts and culture groups and $35,000 for six Special Projects Grants to boost creative arts experiences that engage the community. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Clarke University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program achieved a 100 percent first-time pass rate on the national exam for its 2023 and 2024 graduates—one of only four programs nationwide to do so. The program, which limits each cohort to 33 students and offers hands-on clinical training including a cadaver lab, also reported a 100 percent job placement rate within six months of graduation.  KWWL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bull sharks—the freshwater marvel—have been spotted far up the Mississippi River, with one caught near Alton and additional reports coming from areas near Davenport and St. Louis. The sightings show that these sharks travel over 1,000 miles from the Gulf to find safe nursery zones for their young.  WJOD
