  • Bear is a 1.5-year-old dog — weighing about 53 pounds — who loves playing fetch and meeting new people at Dubuque Regional Humane Society on Chavenelle Road. The shelter advises families with other pets to arrange a meet-and-greet and invites potential adopters to call 563-582-6766.  WJOD

CRIME NEWS

  • At around 4:30 a.m. on July 1, officers from multiple jurisdictions stopped a vehicle on Highway 151 near Cascade and exchanged gunfire with James Sherrill from Linn County—he was fatally shot while a DCSO sergeant was wounded and later released after treatment, with the officers involved now identified for review by county and state legal officials.  KWWL
  • Dubuque Police arrested 44-year-old Jacinto Lopez-Perez and 51-year-old Jason Ralston—both charged in the beating of a man on the 400 block of Main Street late Monday night—while they search for two other suspects after the victim, who was intoxicated, suffered facial injuries and was taken to hospital.  Radio Dubuque

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Marley Schmitz, a 10-year-old from Dubuque, advanced to the quarterfinals of the National Wildlife Federation’s Jr. Ranger competition by sharing nature videos with conservation facts and tips. She needs votes to move into the semi-finals—if she wins the $20,000 prize, she will donate part of it to local parks.  KCRG
  • Residents along the Mississippi River are facing the annual mayfly invasion that has left Dubuque and nearby communities with messy sidewalks and a strong smell—an effect of the insects’ natural mating and dying process. The mayflies emerge in large swarms to mate and die within 24 to 48 hours, prompting residents to prepare for cleanup.  WJOD

  • Governor Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Chris Cournoyer honored two volunteers from UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital with the Governor’s Volunteer Award for their dedication and care. More than 290 awards were given to volunteers across 96 communities in 2025 as part of the state’s recognition program.  KWWL
