CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Dubuque teen Lorenzo Cruz pleaded guilty last week to two felony charges tied to an officer-involved shooting on Christmas Eve in the 500 block of Nevada Street—he threatened officers with a knife, was wounded in his shoulder and arm and will face a sentencing hearing on July 28th. - ➤ A Dubuque County deputy who was shot during a traffic stop early Tuesday morning along Highway 151 near Cascade was sent home after treatment at Mercy Hospital—transferred from University of Iowa Hospitals—and investigators said details remain limited as the driver, who was shot and killed, has not been identified. - ➤ A Dubuque man with 11 prior felony convictions was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison after he fired his pistol during an argument on a porch on August 4th, with the bullet passing through a home's front wall and lodging in its living room wall—he fled the scene and was arrested on August 16th. - ➤ The Iowa Department of Education awarded nearly $258,000 to five groups to fund Local College and Career Access Networks for the 2025-26 academic year — the Attendance Matters network in Dubuque County will work to reduce chronic absenteeism and help students advance to college. KWWL

- ➤ Data from Iowa’s Department of Human Services shows that in 2024, 7,420 Dubuque County residents used SNAP, a 32.4% drop from 10,984 in 2015.
