COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eastern Iowa will celebrate Independence Day with fireworks events that run until July 6; in Dubuque, residents can watch the Air Show and Fireworks on July 3 at AY McDonald Park and Boat Ramp, which will feature air show entertainment and food vendors. Other towns like Anamosa and Belle Plaine have planned parades, vendor fairs, and fireworks shows—providing a full weekend of festivities for community members.  The Gazette
  • Community donations saved East Dubuque's summer pool and Independence Day fireworks show after a $30,000 funding gap threatened both events—local donors quickly stepped in to cover the shortfall. The EDGE Foundation said the celebration will begin downtown today at 5:30 p.m. and end with fireworks at 10 p.m.  KCRG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After heavy rain in its basin yesterday, the Mississippi River in Dubuque stood at 10.8 feet this morning and will begin rising tomorrow—expected to reach just over 14.6 feet by next Friday while remaining below the 15-foot action stage.  Radio Dubuque

HEALTH NEWS

  • Farmers in Iowa and Illinois use 2,4-D to control weeds, yet studies link the chemical to cancer, hormone issues, and other health risks for those living near treated fields. New pesticide data will be released in September to help guide safety measures—residents are encouraged to wash produce and choose organic options when possible.  WJOD

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the 2025 regional softball brackets for all five classes on Friday morning. The regionals will begin on July 7 — for Class 2A and 1A and on July 10 for the other three classes, with finals on July 14-15 and the state tournament held July 21-25 at Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge.  The Gazette
