COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Johnson County farmer Steve Swenka treated his cattle with insecticide after a confirmed case of Theileriosis was reported in southeast Iowa. He worked with his veterinarian to monitor the herd for symptoms and planned to maintain insect control measures for 30 days.  KCRG

CRIME NEWS

  • Dubuque Police arrested 58-year-old Kenneth Klaas of Sun Prairie—accused of withdrawing nearly $38,000 from his dementia-afflicted mother's account at a local care facility—to face charges for first-degree theft, financial exploitation of an older individual, and dependent adult abuse after his brother raised concerns in October.  Radio Dubuque

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New Horizon Academy has opened in Dubuque to serve up to 202 children aged 6 weeks to 5 years — employees at Cottingham & Butler get first priority and discounted rates. The center features more than a dozen classrooms and a STEAM room — and an app lets parents track daily updates.  KCRG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local schools in Dubuque County will use the Trees for Kids grant to plant trees in public spaces this fall — the grant offers up to $2,500 per project and requires kids to help with planting. Applications must be submitted online by August 22 at 4 p.m. to secure funding for a greener community.  WJOD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than 80 Iowa faith leaders sent a letter to Senators Grassley and Ernst asking them to block changes to Medicaid and SNAP — changes critics warn would hurt low-income Iowans. Grassley said the bill will support working families while faith leaders caution that cutting these programs could harm thousands relying on them.  The Gazette
  • The City Council approved a new ordinance on Monday night that lets residents use consumer fireworks on July 3, July 4, and December 31 in Dubuque during set hours (July 3: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., July 4: 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., December 31: 9 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.). The law also requires permission from property owners for private property use and imposes a minimum $250 fine for violators (fireworks are banned on public streets, sidewalks, and parks).  KWWL

  • Dubuque hospital warns that as warmer weather brings more residents to ride electric bicycles, riders face increased risks + Dr. Michael Banyasz advises wearing helmets, following road rules, and using bicycle lanes to reduce serious injuries.  KWWL
