  • Poseidon is a playful pup just under 2 years old who weighs around 40 pounds and is this week's pet of the week at the Dubuque Regional Humane Society. Locals can visit the Humane Society at 4242 Chavenelle Road — where he awaits a chance to be a running buddy or cuddle partner.  WJOD

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fred Petrick was a local magician and actor who started performing in Cedar Rapids plays and became known as Mombo the Clown when he joined the Dr. Max Show on WMT-TV in November 1961 after a live mishap led to his character's debut. He entertained local audiences for almost 20 years, earned honors such as a Community Appreciation Award and a city-declared Fred Petrick Day (April 6), and died at 94 in 2001.  The Gazette
  • The Great Galena Balloon Race will take place from June 20 to June 22 on the North Course Practice Range at Eagle Ridge Resort and will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Eastern Iowa and Camp Hertko Hollow—families will enjoy hot air balloon races, rides, music, and activities with $5 admission, free parking, and shuttle service.  Radio Dubuque
  • Heritage Works, a local historic preservation nonprofit, will host the Prairie School Legacy in Iowa Symposium on June 27th - 28th at the city council chambers in downtown Dubuque to bring together experts and enthusiasts to explore the Prairie School movement, with presentations, a cocktail reception and dinner on Friday evening and lunch with guided tours on Saturday.  Radio Dubuque

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Dubuque Community School Board unanimously approved a new policy that bans personal electronic devices in class starting this fall; high school students may use them during lunch in the cafeteria. The board also approved a 2.8% raise for superintendent Amy Hawkins, increasing her salary to $242,110—an added $17,500 in her retirement account.  Radio Dubuque

  • A new video shows the local black bear known as Google Eyes with an injured eye and a limping front leg seen in a backyard off Peru Road. The Iowa DNR said the bear’s unusual spinning behavior (possibly linked to a train incident) has raised concern among residents while it remains resilient.  KWWL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Camerican International, Inc. recalled its Casa Mamita Churro Bites Filled with Chocolate Hazelnut Cream sold at ALDI stores in 13 states including Iowa after failing to list milk on the label — customers should return any affected boxes for a full refund.  WJOD
  • Iowa Health and Human Services confirmed that a man in eastern Iowa, aged 18-40 (vaccinated), tested positive for measles yesterday, marking the first confirmed case in the region; officials did not share his location or travel history.  KCRG

  • Cedar Rapids Prairie infielder Michael Day ended his busy dual role by finishing the state tennis meet and playing in back-to-back baseball games where he recorded two hits and two RBIs in each, helping his team start 15-0; he said he was relieved to focus solely on baseball plus enjoy a simpler schedule.  The Gazette
