  • Today, United Way of Dubuque Area Tri-States reported it is $70,000 short of its fiscal year goal due to a decline in payroll deductions—raising concerns that the group may have to reduce essential support for local low-income, disabled and elderly residents.  KCRG

  • Melanie McLane, a former Party City manager, is finalizing a local spot to open Party Town, her new store that will sell themed party supplies like plates, napkins, tablecloths and utensils—she secured a $4,000 Kiva microloan from 91 lenders in 2½ weeks for startup costs—and she plans to hire staff and eventually expand her service to both individuals and businesses.  The Gazette

  • The Dubuque County Attorney has suspended the homicide investigation into Charles Jaeger's 1984 death after new evidence and fiscal concerns prompted the decision—Jaeger's family stated they understand the move while confirming they had no involvement in his murder.  KWWL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Community members in Dubuque will join a county clean-up on June 7th at 9 a.m. to remove trash from public lands such as John Deere Marsh, Heritage Pond, Swiss Valley Preserve, River Museum Ice Harbor, and Bergfeld Pond (clean-up supplies will be provided) to protect local wildlife and water quality.  WJOD

  • Iowa’s congressional delegation backed a bill that cuts Medicaid spending by $625 billion and adds work requirements for able-bodied adults, a measure expected to reduce national enrollment by 10.3 million and affect about 58,000 Iowans. Rep. Miller-Meeks defended her vote at a campaign event in Davenport — saying those not meeting work, school, or volunteer requirements risk losing coverage — while local voters continue to express concerns over health care access.  The Gazette
