- ➤ Dubuque was named one of America’s safest mid-sized cities when SmartAssets ranked it 15th of 75, reviewing crime, vehicle fatality risks and disaster threats (the ranking considered violent and property crime rates); it ranked second among Iowa cities behind Ames. Radio Dubuque
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Loras College allocated $247,180 to its women’s basketball team in 2024, which was $465,950 below the state average of $713,130; the amount made up 4.4% of the college’s overall sports spending in Dubuque, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Dubuque Times
- ➤ Andrea Runde, a longtime instructional coach and English teacher at Hempstead, has been appointed as the new assistant principal to begin next school year at Hempstead High School — replacing Jared Deutch, who was named principal at Dubuque Senior High School. Radio Dubuque
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Dubuque and Iowa DOT will offer a free shuttle for walkers and bikers during Julien Dubuque Bridge repairs beginning June 10 until mid September, with vehicle traffic on U.S. Highway 20 detoured and the bridge closed to pedestrians (reservations recommended 24 hours ahead). KWWL

- ➤ Fans can look forward to Iowa's first official night game in 10 years as the Hawkeyes face the Cyclones at Kinnick Stadium on Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. with NBC airing the game — a revival of the Cy-Hawk rivalry under the lights. WJOD
