Good morning, Dubuque. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 24th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Dunleith Park Board has announced that the aquatic center in East Dubuque will open this season after initially planning to close due to financial constraints — the decision was reversed after a town hall meeting and generous community donations. Officials said they will share the opening date soon and urged residents to continue donating to help with maintenance costs.  Radio Dubuque

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The USDA approved Gov. Kim Reynolds’ waiver that will stop SNAP users from buying sodas, sweets, and garden seeds starting Jan. 1—this change aims to cut obesity by refocusing food assistance on healthy foods. Some critics warn the rule may restrict choices for low-income families while state officials say it returns SNAP to its original purpose.  The Gazette
  • The City of Dubuque Public Works Department will host a Touch a Truck event at the Dubuque Farmers Market on May 25 from 7 to noon so locals can view equipment (dump truck, backhoe, mini excavator, and asphalt roller) for National Public Works Week.  Radio Dubuque

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local residents are advised to inspect their yards for clusters of tiny, reddish-brown ticks and treat them with diatomaceous earth or approved sprays—cleanup by removing leaf litter and trimming tall grass is key to preventing tick-borne diseases. Experts warn that if tick nests persist, calling pest control may be necessary to safeguard children and pets—helping to lessen the risk of serious illness.  WJOD
