  • Iowa’s foster care system faces a shortage as Four Oaks receives 35% more child referrals than available foster families and needs roughly 1,266 new placements to meet demand. 85-year-old Marge Flannery from Fort Dodge—who has fostered between 500 and 1,000 children over 50 years—continues to care for children while the agency works to recruit new families.  The Gazette
  • Dubuque’s Great Give Day raised over $600,000 on Wednesday, breaking the previous record of $468,000 and aiding nonprofits across eastern Iowa. The event exceeded its $500,000 goal + showed strong local support.  KCRG

CRIME NEWS

  • Dubuque Police arrested 40-year-old Leonardo Campbell after a five-hour standoff on Tuesday night at a home in the 21-hundred block of Stafford Street — he was wanted on 10 active warrants and tear gas was used before a tactical squad intervened.  Radio Dubuque

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Mark Youth Enrichment is launching its Apples for Students campaign to equip over 3,600 students across Dubuque, East Dubuque and Western Dubuque with fully stocked backpacks — the drive relies on donations as low as $59 from local partners like Hartig Drug Stores to cover school supplies.  WJOD
  • Hoover Elementary in Dubuque, which opened in 1968 and served the community for 57 years, will close next week after its final open house tonight that honored its legacy + drew many former students, teachers, and local residents. The building will serve as a flex space for 150 Irving Elementary students + host St. Mark Youth Enrichment's after-school program as its staff move to new district roles.  KWWL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Senate passed the No Tax on Tips Act, which lets workers deduct up to $25K in reported tips from federal income taxes as the bill heads to the House for debate. State lawmakers in Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin have also introduced similar measures to boost take-home pay for service employees amid labor concerns.  WJOD
  • The Dubuque Mayor and City Council Compensation Task Force met last night and recommended a 6.3% pay raise for part-time city leaders—raising the mayor’s pay from $14,800 to $15,732 and council wages from $11,100 to $11,799 since they have not been increased since 2022. The recommendation will go to the City Council next month for review.  Radio Dubuque
  • In 2024, every H-1B petition filed by employers in the Dubuque Times publication area was approved—data from USCIS showed a 100% approval rate that surpassed the nationwide average of 98%. The filings increased by 23.5% from 2023—led by sectors like Educational Services and Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services with top companies such as Infoweb Systems, Inc. filing multiple petitions.  Dubuque Times
  • Today, the Iowa State Patrol is ramping up enforcement and public education — focusing on aggressive driving, speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving as travel increases during the start of the 100 Deadliest days. They also warn drivers to keep phones out of their hands while driving since Iowa’s new hands-free law takes effect on July 1 — an effort to reduce road risks.  KCRG
