EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Multicultural Family Center Board of Directors said the loss of AmeriCorps funding means the Summer Teen Empowerment Program will be paused for this summer — the program offers high school elective credit through activities like gardening, financial literacy, and planning. The center hopes to regain funding so the program can resume later.  Radio Dubuque
  • The University of Dubuque named Jeanne Rupert as founding Dean for the proposed John and Alice Butler College of Osteopathic Medicine following a national search; she brings over 20 years of experience in academic leadership (including clinical care and public health). GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dubuque city leaders may get a 6.3% raise starting January 1 after a seven-member task force recommended raising the mayor's pay to $15,732 and council members' pay to $11,799 because the cost of living has increased 6.3%—the City Council will review the proposal in June.  KCRG
  • During a meeting on Monday, Dubuque County Sheriff Joe Kennedy defended his decision to decline the federal ICE Task Force program—citing a lack of staffing to support both federal duties and local public safety.
