  • Denver Air Connection is offering a buy one get one flight deal for Chicago Cubs fans traveling from Dubuque to Chicago O’Hare when the Cubs are at home—flyers can book weekend trips departing on Friday or Saturday and returning on Sunday or Monday using promo code HOMERUN25 with flights leaving Dubuque at 7:50 a.m. and arriving at 8:45 a.m. and returning from O’Hare at 5:00 p.m. and arriving at 5:55 p.m. while the deal runs through the end of September.  WJOD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Multicultural Family Center in Dubuque paused its Summer Teen Empowerment Program for 2025 after AmeriCorps funding was cut—STEP offered high school elective credit and practical lessons in areas like gardening and financial literacy. The center remains hopeful that funding will soon be restored so the program can resume.  KCRG
  • Black students made up 7.9% of Dubuque County public school enrollment in the 2023-24 school year, with 1,005 enrolled, which is a 3.4% increase from last year. Dubuque Senior High School recorded the highest Black student count at 152 students + led among the 25 schools.  Dubuque Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Iowa silver maples and their hybrids produced extra seeds because several years of drought stressed the trees, Department of Natural Resources Forester Mark Vitosh said — the trees used energy to flower instead of growing leaves, which may benefit woodland regeneration while causing messes in urban gardens.  The Gazette

  • East Dubuque residents are invited to a Town Hall at the East Dubuque Library tonight at 6 o'clock to discuss the pool's future as it will not open for the 2025 season because of financial challenges—board members will seek community input to explore sustainable options.  Radio Dubuque
  • Governor Kim Reynolds requested a federal waiver to ban SNAP purchases of items subject to state sales tax, including garden seeds, candy, gum and soft drinks, as part of an effort to promote healthier choices. If approved, the restrictions will begin Jan 1 and last for five years while a study tracks participants’ health behaviors — the proposal has prompted mixed reactions from local advocates.  The Gazette
  • At Monday's Dubuque County Board meeting, Sheriff Joe Kennedy said he declined the federal ICE program offer because his deputies already provide support for warrant services and he was worried they might not be available for local emergencies. He said he received no threat from any federal agency after making his decision.  KWWL
