ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ In 2022, Social Security transfers in Jackson County provided an average of $4,715 per resident, making up 8.5% of their income and totaling $91.11 million in aid. The program was the largest government transfer source, with Medicare & Medicaid following as the next biggest aid programs. Dubuque Times
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ During the 2023 to 2024 school year, Dubuque County schools enrolled 10,018 white students out of 12,797 total, making up 78.3% of enrollment and marking a 1.8% drop from the previous year. Hempstead High School — with 1,189 white students — led the county's white enrollment. Dubuque Times
- ➤ Monday evening, the Dubuque Community School Board met at the Forum on Chaney Road to consider a petition for a $70 million bond to fund a new middle school at Washington Middle School. If voters approve the measure in November, the bond + an extra $51.9 million in borrowing will fund the project's total cost of $121.9 million + raise property taxes by about $1 per $1,000 of taxable value. - ➤ Dubuque County Sheriff Joe Kennedy said his office did not have enough staff to join the 287(g) ICE Task Force program because federal duties would pull deputies away from local emergencies. He noted that while local officials approved funding for one extra employee, joining the program could label the county as a sanctuary jurisdiction—threatening public safety. KCRG
