  • Hospice of Dubuque will host its annual Tree of Life Memorial Service and Lighting Ceremony on Tuesday evening, May 20th at 7:30 p.m. at Washington Park in downtown Dubuque—attendees are advised to bring a lawn chair due to limited seating as the service features prayer, music, readings, and a guest speaker.  Radio Dubuque

  • Officials from the DNR warned that bears are returning to Iowa with sightings rising to more than four per year, mainly in May and June when young bears search for food. Residents are advised to keep a safe distance (100 yards) and use loud noises to scare bears away if encountered.  WJOD

  • In 2022, Dubuque County got $4,254 per person from Social Security transfers, which made up 39.1% of government aid totaling $419.73 million - the Economic Innovation Group said.  Dubuque Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall for about 3,800 Dlesot Snap Hair Clips sold on Amazon between April and September due to lead levels above federal limits — consumers have been advised to stop using the clips and contact manufacturer YFLGOTOO for refund instructions by providing a picture of the disposal — no health issues have been reported so far.  WJOD
  • Free, virtual panel discussions on cancer will run this week from today through May 16 as experts talk about Iowa’s rising cancer rates, new treatments at UI’s Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, and risks from federal research funding cuts—topics include causes, screening, and economic impacts. The sessions will give Iowans clear insights into ongoing research and efforts to fight cancer.  The Gazette
  • The Food and Drug Administration said 4,515 cases of Yellowstone Brown Sugar Molasses Baked Beans—made by Vietti Food Group—are recalled because they contain undeclared soy that can trigger allergic reactions. Affected consumers should return the product to Walmart for a refund and may call Vietti Food Group at 513 682 2474 for more details.  WJOD
