COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Starting May 12, ITC Midwest will fly helicopters low over Dubuque and nearby towns to inspect high-voltage electric lines for damage and overgrown vegetation — flights will continue until May 23 if weather permits. The patrols, required by NERC standards, aim to help keep power safe and reliable for local residents.  WJOD

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At 9:45 a.m. Sunday, fire crews from Holy Cross, New Vienna, and Sherill responded to a barn fire at Bradley Kluesner Farm on Ridge Road when brush burning spread embers that set the barn ablaze—firefighters contained the blaze, causing about $10-thousand in damage with no injuries or livestock harmed.  Radio Dubuque

  • The Five Flags Center will host The Nutcracker on December 14 - a family show by the World Ballet Company with a Tchaikovsky score and 40 ballet dancers from around the globe. Presale tickets are available today with the code SNOWFLAKE and general tickets will go on sale Friday, May 9.  KCRG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Early in May, the Iowa DNR estimated there are three to four black bears in the state and predicted more bears will cross into areas near Dubuque from Minnesota and Wisconsin during the breeding season — local officials are drafting an ordinance to advise residents on secure food practices.  The Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dubuque passed a new ordinance on Monday night that forbids feeding or harassing bears and imposes fines up to $750 for violations. Residents who do not remove a bird feeder or trash when asked by police or conservation officials could also be fined (a measure to reduce dangerous interactions with wildlife).  KCRG
  • 27-year-old Matt Henick, a property manager and Loras College graduate who has lived in Dubuque for 10 years, announced his candidacy for the Ward Three city council seat this fall; he co-founded Premier Property Management Group and manages apartments for about 350 tenants - 200 in Dubuque - while pledging to boost public safety, affordable housing, and transparency.  Radio Dubuque
