  • Nearly three years after a high-speed crash on July 1 that killed three Dubuque teens, the families behind Forever Seventeen visited Hempstead High today with the preserved Camaro – a moving exhibit urging tougher penalties and a reminder for young drivers to avoid speeding.  KWWL

CRIME NEWS

  • Yesterday, 32-year-old Nicolas Welter from Dubuque pleaded guilty in federal court in Cedar Rapids to one count of possession of a firearm by a felon—he now faces up to 15 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.  Radio Dubuque
  • Dubuque man Ryan Humphreys (31) was arrested on charges of first degree theft, third degree burglary and second degree criminal mischief after he broke into an unlocked garage near Peosta on March 30 and took over $10,000 in property, with $3,600 in damage.  Radio Dubuque

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Kim Reynolds signed a law on Wednesday that requires Iowa schools to restrict cellphone use during class starting this fall— the policy will use model guidelines from the Department of Education and include exceptions for emergencies and special education needs.  The Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bear sightings are increasing in Dubuque as Dubuque County Conservation and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources report about five sightings believed to involve one black bear. The black bear, hunted to extinction in the mid-1800s, may appear more often this spring as populations from Wisconsin and Minnesota move south ahead of the breeding season from late May to early June.  Radio Dubuque
  • The Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency warned that rechargeable batteries in discarded devices can spark fires and damage equipment in Dubuque. The agency has set up special collection containers at local sites—like the Municipal Services Center and public libraries—to help residents recycle batteries safely.  WJOD
