ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ruby-throated hummingbirds have begun arriving in Iowa now, and local residents are preparing their yards with sugar water feeders and bright tubular flowers to welcome the migrants. Locals are advised to keep feeders away from predator hiding spots like areas frequented by cats and snakes.  WJOD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local leaders fear a proposed Iowa House bill passed on April 22 will limit Dubuque’s use of Tax Increment Financing, a key tool for development, potentially stalling projects such as a downtown parking lot conversion into 80 apartments planned for 2028.  KCRG
  • The Iowa DOT warns that over 100 road projects are planned across the state, with drivers advised to use detours to avoid work zones — construction continues through spring and summer.  WJOD

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Dubuque County Drug Task Force collected 128 lbs of medications and 68 lbs of sharps during the National Take Back Event.   • CDC data shows rising ER visits for tick bites across Iowa due to longer active seasons and expanding habitats; local residents planning outdoor activities are advised to take preventions (like applying Permethrin to clothing) to reduce exposure to tick-borne illnesses.  WJOD
