CRIME NEWS

  • A Dubuque man, Douglas Winner (52) pleaded guilty to 2nd degree theft after he took jewelry from his elderly mother and sold the pieces to pawn shops, and he received a suspended five-year prison term with three years of probation.  Radio Dubuque

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Loras College has held daily prayers with campus bells tolling at noon and photos of Pope Francis on display since he died Monday morning, and the campus community has gathered to honor his legacy. A memorial Mass for the late pontiff will be held at 5 p.m. today at St. Raphael Cathedral in Dubuque — an important event for local Catholics.  KWWL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jason Davis, a lifelong Dubuque resident, nonprofit worker and former Army Ranger who serves on the Long Range Planning Advisory Commission, announced his candidacy for mayor and said his background prepares him to lead the city through its challenges — his campaign will focus on public safety, economic growth and fiscal transparency. Incumbent Mayor Brad Cavanagh, whose term ends in December and who is running for re-election on a record of infrastructure improvements and grant funding, is also seeking another term in office.  KWWL
  • City of Dubuque earned a clean audit rating for its fiscal year 2024 financial statements—independent auditors confirmed the records fairly reflected the city's finances. The audit was conducted in line with accepted standards as required by state law.  Radio Dubuque
  • Dubuque City Council member Ric Jones said he will run for re-election in November for his sixth term on the council after joining in 2006 — he claims he remains accessible, accountable, well informed and prepared to address complex issues.  Radio Dubuque

  • Tim Lester said he was optimistic about Iowa’s new-look quarterback room even as he noted the younger players still have a long way to go—he praised Mark Gronowski’s recovery and added that a strong transfer can be added quickly if one emerges. Former Wake Forest quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski has now committed to join the team, further boosting the roster depth.  The Gazette
  • Dubuque students from Hempstead and Senior High in the esports program worked with the Dubuque Esports League to earn a top 5 finish in the Iowa High School Esports Association playoffs for Overwatch 2 this past winter. They will compete in Valorant and Mario Kart this spring—while a fall season is set to feature Super Smash Bros. and Rainbow Six Siege.  WJOD
