Good morning, Dubuque. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 16th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Cathedral of St. Raphael reopened Tuesday after six months of renovations that finished a $10 million project involving over 200 workers who updated the building and campus (with a state grant covering about $1.8 million); churchgoers celebrated the reopening with a Chrism Mass.  KCRG

CRIME NEWS

  • Christopher Higgins, a 34-year-old accused of driving drunk, hit Dubuque City Manager Mike Van Milligen on Main Street on March 27 when Van Milligen was exiting his car and then drove away, and Higgins pleaded not guilty and is set for trial on August 19 as police reported he swerved and was later found unconscious behind the wheel.  Radio Dubuque

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Clayton Ridge School Board voted (five to two) last week to move to a four-day school week starting next school year. The district has not yet decided whether Monday or Friday will be off (leaders studied the change for months).  Radio Dubuque
  • Applications for the Students First Education Savings Account program open today at 8 a.m. and provide state funds for tuition, fees and other education expenses for eligible nonpublic school students—new applicants must create an ESA Portal account while returning users log in before the deadline at 11:59 p.m. on June 30, with options available in English and Spanish.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa Health and Human Services on Tuesday submitted a federal waiver that would require able-bodied adults on expanded Medicaid to work 80 hours per month once pending legislation is passed; Governor Kim Reynolds said the measure is meant to focus Medicaid on those who truly need it. A 30-day public comment period will allow Iowans to offer input (with two public hearings scheduled).  KCRG
  • Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds announced Friday that she will not run for a third term and ended last year with over $3 million in her campaign account. State law lets her use the funds for charitable donations, transfers to political parties, refunds to donors, or keeping her committee open for future use — but she cannot give the money directly to another campaign.  The Gazette
