ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Friday night, a barn fire on the 28,000 block of North Bankston Road in rural Dubuque County injured an unknown number of livestock — estimated losses reached $150,000 while the homeowners were not present and no people were hurt.  KWWL
  • Several Dubuque County fire departments responded to a barn fire at the Charlie and Carrie Deutmeyer farm east of New Vienna Friday night, finding the barn fully engulfed in flames with no injuries, damage estimated at $150,000 — and an unknown number of injured livestock.  Radio Dubuque

ECONOMY NEWS

  • In 2022, Medicaid transfers in Dubuque County accounted for 3.4% of total income with an average of $2,070 per person and a total of $204.22 million according to the Economic Innovation Group—this made it the second smallest contributor among government transfers as Social Security led at 39.1%. These figures show the county's continued reliance on federal support in its income mix.  Dubuque Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Dubuque Community School District will hold two community sessions on facility planning—one on April 16 and one on April 28—at 6 p.m. at the district offices on Chaney Road. The sessions will review the planning work led by INVISION Architecture and a community taskforce that updated options to consolidate middle schools and examined survey results.  Radio Dubuque

FINANCE NEWS

  • The federal government will soon restart wage garnishment for borrowers who are more than 270 days late on their student loan payments, including many in Iowa, with up to 15% of paychecks taken—borrowers who receive a notice have 30 days to request a hearing and can explore repayment options like Fresh Start before collections resume.  WJOD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Iowa must update their driver’s licenses to REAL ID by May 7 to fly commercially and access federal buildings—licenses with a gold star meet the requirement while non-compliant IDs may lead to extra screening. Applicants must bring proof of identity, social security, and residency to the DMV, and processing can take up to thirty days.  WJOD

  • Zach Johnson, a 49-year-old Cedar Rapids native, posted his lowest Masters round— a 6-under par 66— at Augusta National on Saturday. He eagled the second hole and made six birdies from the 9th to the 16th to move up the leaderboard.  The Gazette
