COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A study by NordPass revealed that many Iowans use weak passwords that hackers can crack in less than one second—residents are urged to update their codes immediately to protect their data. If you use common terms like secret123 or qwerty, now is the time to switch to stronger alternatives.  WJOD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Union Community Schools in La Porte City has begun using ZeroEyes—an AI gun detection system that analyzes over three billion images each day—to alert local authorities immediately if a firearm is detected.  WJOD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Texas lawyer explained that under Iowa law, drivers face an OWI charge if their BAC reaches 0.08 percent or if a controlled substance is detected—coffee is not mentioned. He urged drivers to follow safety rules and keep their focus on the road.  WJOD
  • Governor Kim Reynolds signed Iowa's new hands-free driving law on April 2—making Iowa the 31st state to pass such legislation in memory of Roland Taylor. The law will go into effect on July 1 with warnings issued until Jan. 1 and increases fines from $45 to $100, with a $500 fine and possible license suspension for causing injury.  WJOD
  • Later this month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Lower Pool 10 restoration project at the North Gazebo in Guttenberg on Tuesday, April 22nd at 1 p.m.—the $11-million project aims to restore South Ferry Slough and slow erosion from recent floods and wave action.  Radio Dubuque

  • City High's Little Hawks tied 3-3 with Ottumwa on March 31 and then defeated Linn-Mar 3-1 on Saturday during the Trojan Classic at Ed Barker Field — coach Jose Michel Fajardo said the win showed the team played as one. The team will face Iowa City Liberty on April 15 and expects to build on their strong season.  The Gazette
  • Iowa’s defensive backs changed after three key players ended their time in 2024. Xavier Nwankpa is now first-team free safety and the team will work to raise its play level in the coming season—new players are learning the defense.  The Gazette
