- ➤ A Peosta man was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Monday after pleading guilty to an insurance fraud scheme that involved claiming money for stolen counterfeit Rolex watches—he was also ordered to pay $2,395 in fines. KCRG
- ➤ Dubuque County District Court has postponed the trial of 25-year-old Tavon Baylock—charged with two counts attempted murder in a 2022 drive-by shooting—until June 10th later this year. Radio Dubuque
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Yesterday, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a law that bans holding cellphones while driving unless using voice commands, and the rules will go into effect on July 1—joining 30 other states. The law raises fines to give law enforcement a stronger tool to reduce crashes caused by distracted driving. The Gazette
- ➤ Today, Governor Reynolds signed a law that will take effect on July 1 — it bans drivers from holding phones while driving and starts a six-month grace period with no citations. Iowa State Patrol Trooper Bob Conrad and Dubuque Police Lt. Luke Bock said the measure is designed to save lives — violations will cost $100 and may rise to $1,000 if phone use leads to a fatal crash. KWWL
