Good morning, Dubuque. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 27th of March.

CRIME NEWS

  • Humberto Leonidas-Suarez (61) pleaded guilty earlier this month to illegal reentry after being deported in 2010 and 2024 and was sentenced this week to over one month in federal prison while held by U.S. Marshals in Dubuque County.  Radio Dubuque
  • Shawn Small, a Dubuque man aged 55, pled guilty to stealing nearly $43,000 from his elderly mother-in-law living in a nursing home and was sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday in Dubuque County District Court—ATM withdrawals began in October 2022 and continued into 2023 after funds were reported missing.  Radio Dubuque

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Employers said younger workers value work-life balance more than high pay based on a survey by Iowa Workforce Development that found only 41% of college students wanted to stay in Iowa (down from 47% in 2008) while 38% planned to leave (up from 27% in 2008). This trend may affect local hiring as these students seek jobs that respect their personal time.  KCRG
  • Dollar Tree completed a sale of its Family Dollar brand to private equity groups for $1 billion after nearly 700 Family Dollar stores closed in the tri-state area—leaving fewer discount choices for local shoppers. The move helped the company focus on its main brand—while the future of Family Dollar now depends on its new owners' plans.  WJOD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Dubuque City Council approved a property tax increase for fiscal year 2026 last night, setting the maximum tax levy at $10.06 per $1,000 of taxable value—a 1.38 percent rise over fiscal year 2025. The change means the average homeowner will pay an extra $33 and the city will raise nearly $30 million in revenue.  Radio Dubuque
  • The Illinois Department of Transportation said that construction on U.S. 20 at the intersection with Barge Terminal Road in East Dubuque will begin next week and continue through the fall to improve safety—and one lane will remain open in each direction along a 1.5-mile work zone. The $13 million project is expected to be completed by November.  Radio Dubuque
