COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eastern Iowa veteran Norbert Meyer — a former B-29 bombardier who enlisted at 18 and awaited orders when World War II ended — turned 100 on March 16 and received a thank you letter from the Iowa City VA Health Care System honoring his service.  KCRG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Monica and Brian Enyart of a Postville dairy farm use new robotic milkers and manure collectors funded by a $100,000 Iowa Department of Agriculture grant to cut costs and free up 10 hours per day plus they plan to grow their herd by 40 cows this summer.  KCRG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Dubuque's IPC Forest Preserve is a 78-acre park with well-kept hiking and biking trails that let families enjoy nature (a recent 1.4-mile hike revealed a herd of deer and busy squirrels) and offer mountain bikers rugged climbs (local Eagle Scouts have planted new trees along the trails).  WJOD
  • Peregrine Falcons have returned this spring and made their home on the 5th floor ledge of the Dubuque County Courthouse; Momma Falcon laid her first egg before midnight on Monday and will add more eggs as she builds her family. Conservation officials will band the chicks as they hatch in succession starting in late April or early May.  KWWL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Reina Marroquin, a Guatemalan mother from Postville, attended a check-in at the Cedar Rapids ICE office on March 24 with her two children and over 100 supporters—her appointment was unexpectedly rescheduled, fueling fears about her pending immigration case. Other immigrants have faced similar changes that have raised concerns about potential deportations.  The Gazette
  • The USS Iowa submarine—hull number SSN-797—will be commissioned at 9 a.m. Iowa time on April 5 into the U.S. Navy during a ceremony in Groton, with watch parties held statewide and Governor Kim Reynolds set to speak. The vessel, which completed six years of construction and is finalizing tests at sea, will officially join the fleet when its commissioning pennant is raised.  The Gazette

  • North Fayette Valley’s boys’ soccer team won its state title last season and will try to repeat the win when they host Dubuque Wahlert on April 1. Coach Ignacio Fuentes said the team works hard and stays united—qualities that helped secure last season’s title and will drive their challenge this season.  The Gazette
