- ➤ Dubuque County schools enrolled 12,797 students in the 2023-24 school year—this number is 0.5% lower than last year, and Hempstead High School had the highest enrollment with 1,549 students. Dubuque Times
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mayor Brad Cavanagh announced his bid for re-election in November and said he has improved Dubuque’s economy, housing, roads, and public safety with higher pay for police and firefighters — he also noted the return of daily air service and more than 2,400 new homes approved during his time in office. First elected in 2021 and a former city council member, he said the city worked together to overcome hard times. KWWL
- ➤ On Thursday, the Iowa House passed Gov. Reynolds’ paid parental leave bill that gives state employees four weeks of leave for childbirth or adoption and one week for nonbirthing parents—along with bills that require age verification for porn sites and improve post-discharge care for those treated for substance abuse or severe mental illness. The House also approved a measure making noncitizen smuggling a felony with penalties of up to 25 years in prison, and all four bills now move to the Iowa Senate. The Gazette
