Good morning, Dubuque. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 21st of March.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Indivisible Dubuque held a town hall meeting on March 20th at the Dubuque union hall — where over 100 local residents gathered to discuss Medicaid, social security, and government efficiency — after Representative Ashley Hinson did not respond to repeated requests for her participation.  KCRG
  • Dubuque police say a new bill that would ban using cellphones unless they are in hands-free or voice-activated mode could help reduce distracted driving and crashes in the city. The police department reported 1,480 crashes (a nearly six percent increase) and seven fatal crashes in 2024; Lt. Luke Bock said that tighter traffic laws are needed because low staffing makes enforcement difficult (a challenge given rising speeding and distraction).  KCRG
  • Legislation in the Iowa House passed on Wednesday and would require schools to apply for a waiver so they can follow Iowa-specific nutrition guidelines instead of federal standards—this change could risk millions in school meal funding. Meanwhile, the Iowa Legislative Black Caucus urged the public to oppose anti-DEI bills, and both chambers passed a measure limiting local apprenticeship training requirements before the bill goes to Governor Reynolds.  The Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dubuque Health Services Department is seeking information on a male, black and white Great Dane type dog wearing a blue collar that bit someone on Sunday evening around 5:30 in the 23-hundred block of White Street—officials say they need the dog's health and vaccination records.  Radio Dubuque

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, teams from Iowa, Iowa State and Northern Iowa competed with strong wins including UNI's Cael Happel who pinned his opponent in 5:51—his performance led to further advances in the tournament. The opening round saw impressive comebacks and debut victories that pushed several top wrestlers to the next stage.  The Gazette
  • Six Iowa Hawkeyes basketball players entered the transfer portal after head coach Fran McCaffery was fired, leaving the team to rebuild its roster. The program will hire a new coach and recruit fresh talent for next season — a major change in its direction.  WJOD
