ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Monday, Dubuque and Asbury Fire Departments battled a field fire near Lowe's and Walmart in Dubuque — strong winds helped the fire spread and caused power outages — as crews used special equipment to control the blaze. Fire Marshal Derek Paulson said he rarely saw such dry conditions so early in the season and urged residents to follow the county burn ban.  KWWL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new sports complex on Chaplain Schmitt Island could bring over $20 million in revenue and more than 1,000 jobs to Dubuque, according to a Dubuque Racing Association study. Mayor Brad Cavanagh said the project will replace current park fields with updated sports venues and build an indoor facility and will need a public—private partnership to cover its $75 million cost.  KCRG
  • Residents of Dubuque County received an average of $10,866 per person in government transfers in 2022 (from Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and income support), ranking the county 23rd lowest among Iowa counties. The transfers totaled $1.1 billion (making up 18.1% of county income) and were 17.7% lower than the previous year.  Dubuque Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In 2024, 17 nests were watched as Iowa peregrine falcons hatched at least 36 young, averaging 2.77 fledglings per nest compared to 1.9 last year — a record high reproduction rate since 2016. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources used volunteers and power plant employees to check nests at sites like the Iowa Capitol and Dubuque County Courthouse — showing ongoing conservation work.  The Gazette

  • Owen Freeman entered the transfer portal Saturday and teammates Brock Harding and Pryce Sandfort followed Monday as a coaching change unfolds — Sandfort said he might stay if the new coach meets his expectations.  The Gazette
  • Iowa football hired Omar Young as its new running backs coach on Monday—he is 41 and has worked with NFL teams including the Patriots and Bears—replacing Ladell Betts who left for the New York Giants. The head coach said Young builds strong bonds with his players and will help get the team ready for spring practices in over a week.  The Gazette
